On this day we received new Cisco switches that would be used in areas where additional ethernet would be needed for end points. We do not want to just put in a dumb switch but in order to be security minded and proactive our approach is to always use smart switches if a wall jack installation is not feasible. The benefits to smart switches include the below list. Network Management – Creation of VLANs, implementing QoS, port mirroring, and link aggregation. Security – Implementation of Access Control Lists (ACL) and 802.1x authentication. Performance – Data performance will be enhanced

A Field of VoIP (Posted April 17, 2024)
Our largest client is transitioning to a different VOIP provider. This will include transitioning the whole office and the industrial work area. These phones that you see in the photo are the Cisco 7960 VOIP phones, these specific ones are not currently in use and serve as spare phones. The are being grouped together as we inventory and prepare for the new phone provider. We will be returning approximately 100 phones to also include several Cisco 7960 conference room phones as well. The main reason for the change in phone providers is the price. Our client found a better priced vendor where they will save a great amount of money…

Milestone! Now CCNA Certified! (Posted Feb 19, 2024)
I passed!!! I am officially a Cisco Certified Network Associate (CNNA) after passing the exam this past weekend! I focused my studies on this endeaver for the last 6 months. My motivation was driven by the value of learning the content and the value that this certification presents. Networks are incredible how they are made and work! I a lot of enjoyment learning this subject, it might be quite “dry” but not when you find it interesting like I do. My key resources were Cisco’s Official Cert Guides (V1 &VII), David Bombal‘s CCNA Course, and also Jeremy’s IT Lab videos on YouTube. Great mixture of resources! A big thank you…

You will see I begin turning on the equipment here in this video. I added another power strip after considering the joule count for possible power issues due to not having a UPS for this set up. I’m also purchasing other devices to add to this rack. I will have 3 Cisco routers, 1 Cisco layer 3 level switch, another Cisco switch and then a Dell switch as of now. Maybe I’ll add more later if I feel the need. With 3 routers I am able to work on routing protocols and I can see how these routers respond to protocol changes. CCNA, I’m Coming for You!
I’m in the thick of studying for this certification! The content is very stimulating to me and I love learning what is under the hood of networks and how they function to provide operations for all of our current day technology. I think of it much like a vehicle in which nearly all adults know how to drive a vehicle, but knowing how the engine works and functions to the small details they are oblivious too. The great thing about working in tech is that you can come by “FREE” unused or old devices to configure and test at home. While the devices are older, these still will provide me the opportunity to familiarize with this type of technology from default and be free to build.
